One more upgrade to 2.6.x One more upgrade to 2.6.x

The lastest phpMyFAQ upgrade from 2.5.x to 2.6.x should not affect users immediately.   Everything looks almost as it used to. The new version should have some options for more 'fancy' content and interactivity options - what we may make use of once we have learned it.  However with an upgrade there always is an option that something was missed in the upgrade process. Please contact us - preferably from our Forums - if you find something broken.

Upgraded to phpMyFAQ 2.5.5 Upgraded to phpMyFAQ 2.5.5

Users coming here frequently will notice a quite new look here. This is because we have upgraded to phpMyFAQ 2.5.5 from a 2.0 version. We had some problems with the adminstrative back-end in 2.0 that are now solved - partly due to the upgrade itself and partly due to help from phpMyFAQ team. Thanks a lot. Except for the looks you may not find much difference between 2.0 and 2.5 at first look. But there are very nice differences if you go into details. First of all 2.5 uses de-facto web standard components (like jquery) and quite a lot of AJAX that makes the system more consistent and faster to work with. Thanks to phpMyFAQ team - again!

One more security update One more security update

Latest upgrade of phpMyFAQ to 2.0.17 contains one more fix for a scripting vulnerability. We stayed with the 2.0 tree for the time being even though 2.5 is now released as a stable version. 2.5 is probably better in a tech sense (with more AJAX, jquery etc.) but it does not matter very much for how we use the FAQ system. We may upgrade to 2.5 later but we have not checked it in detail yet.  Also we will maybe wait for 2.6 before abandoning 2.0.

They come fast these days! They come fast these days!

Only a few days after upgrade to phpMyFAQ 2.0.14 one more security related update came.  We have upgraded to phpMyFAQ 2.0.15 with a fix for a cross-site scripting vulnerability.

It did not last long ... It did not last long ...

...after the upgrade to 2.0.13 before we had to upgrade to 2.0.14.  The phpMyFAQ changelogs for this version mentions "fixed authentication bypass" .. so we thought we would protect our users against the chock of being mistaken for somebody like .. 'peterlaursen'. :-)

Additionally if you observe something not working as it should after this upgrade then ... well you know what I want to say!

One more upgrade. One more upgrade.

The lastest upgrade from phpMyFAQ 2.0.11 to 2.0.13 was primarily applied in order to improve the spam protection.  As usual if you find something broken after this upgrade please contact us about this!

Upgraded FAQ software again! Upgraded FAQ software again!

There is no particular reason for the latest upgrade to phpMyFAQ 2.0.11 - only we have skipped a few upgrades before that.  So now about time to get the latest available bugfixes etc. added here!

Security Update Security Update

The latest update to 2.0.8 is a security update (so no need to waste your time :-) ).  As usual if something was broken with the update process please contact us about this

One More Clean-up! One More Clean-up!

Around 15 proposals for new FAQs and comments were just deleted.  They were all question that should have been posted to our Forums (or support ticket system or possibly issue-tracker system) instead.  Or they were misplaced (like added as a translation where it should have been a comment).

Let me repeat, that you want to ask questions in order to get help you should use our Forums.  This FAQ is NOT for *interactive* support! The option to add content (proposals for new FAQs and comments) should only be used if you want to help other people.

One More Upgrade. One More Upgrade.

We have upgraded the FAQ software from 2.0.4 to 2.0.6. If you find something that was forgotten (or that is not as it should) please add a comment to this news post and we will be notified.

The differences between the versions are small for users - probably you will not observe any difference at all.

A Routine Upgrade Only A Routine Upgrade Only

The upgrade of the FAQ system from version 2.0.2 to 2.0.4 is a routine upgrade only.

Users should not experience any difference.

However as 'promised' when we upgraded last time, we have 'cleaned up' in comments.
And this time more 'in depth' than last time!

Deleted were:
1) Comments and questions that should have been posted to our Forums instead.
2) Comments that are now irrelevant because it referred to functionalities that have been changed or issues that have been fixed (in SQLyog or in MySQL) in between.
2007-12-02 07:19

A few issues were there! A few issues were there!

Shortly after the upgrade to 2.02 we noticed that search was broken.  This is now fixed.  Also 'inline graphics' did not display.  Also this has been fixed. It seems that URL's in the topic's BLOB data in the database were distorted by the upgrade process!

We also changed the colors. The default color scheme was pretty much 'screamy' - the new one uses same colors as the rest of our website and won't blow you off your chair!

Finally a very moderate 'clean up' has been done in comments.  3 posts were deleted.  One is obviously spammed.  Another two were old support requests for issues solved long ago (and both should have been posted to our Forums instead actually). We might 'clean up' a few more such wrong-placed comments soon.

BTW: Did you notice that you can now propose a translation of the FAQs here to other languages?

A major update A major update

We updated the phpMyFAQ software to version 2.x - finally. Everything seems to works smoothly. But please report any issue, you may find. And you should preferably use the Forums for this. Thanks!

This version provides a better user experience in a lot of respects, but also much more flexible admin tools. The update has so many new features that also we will have to practice it for a while!

Security update and review Security update and review

I just applied the latest security update to the FAQ system. Over the last couple of days I have also been doing a lot of small corrections needed as a consequence of our recent website changes and recent program versions.
As usual it will be nice to have a note if you see something that I missed. Please use the Forums (or create a ticket). Comments to this FAQ are not reviewed regularly.

Last 1.6.x version? Last 1.6.x version?

The latest updates of the FAQ software (versions 1.6.4 to 1.6.8) are bugfix releases only. First 2.0.x 'non-developer beta' is expected soon (an 'alpha' is available). We will change as soon as we have tested a 2.0 build with successful results. The 2.0.x series will give more options and flexibility for users as well as admins.

One more small update One more small update

Latest updates to 1.6.2 and 1.6.3 versions implements some small bugfixes. Also there is added an option to clear old log files and corresponding database entries from the server disk-space (pretty nice as we had almost 100 MB of logs!) Once again thanks to the phpMyFAQ team.

FAQ write-ups FAQ write-ups

Today I rewrote and edited quite a lot of FAQs to reflect the changes with SQLyog 5.1.x. Also added some new ones.

Please post a note or add a comment if you come across something that I missed and that is still incorrect or incomplete.

FAQ software updated once again. FAQ software updated once again.

Latest update of the FAQ software was May 13th 2006, where we updated to 1.6.1. As usual you should post a note if there is an issue of some kind or if some part of the upgrade process was missed. The 1.6.x series is a major update - for admins as well as for users.

The administrative backend is totally revamped, and everything is now much easier and faster for us. For users there is an "advanced search" that lets you search inside a single category. Each article now has a unique ID. That you can refer to and use with the search. Another new feature is a 'breadcrump navigation' bar on the top of each article. Thanks to Hans and Grethe for inventing this! ;-)

We also implemented the spam protection now available. There are two parts of this: 1) a 'bad word blocker' and 2) Captchas. To enter data ('add comment' or 'add content') you will have to solve such captchas (in the form of a graphical display of six characters: A-Z and 1-9. UPPERCASEs and LOWERCASEs are considered identical by the system and so are '0' (zero) and 'O' (letter 'O')). We have also chosen some VERY clear fonts for generating the graphics, so I don't think you will ever meet one that you cannot solve. However, should it happen, just press the 'refresh' button of your browser and you will have a new one. I don't hope you'll mind this, but some phpMyFAQ systems have been plagued a lot by robotized spam. We hope to prevent this before it happens!

The new update also introduces a wiki-like revision control system. We don't make much use of that now, but may decide to do in the future.

To ask questions you should still go to our Forums. However you can comment on each FAQ here and propose new entries as well. Comments are available to users immediately; proposals must be approved by an Admin.

Our First Anniversary Our First Anniversary

In a few hours from now the Webyog FAQ has been online for 100 days. It has also now reached a 'mature' stage. Of course new entries will occur in the future as Webyog products and MySQL are developing. New problems may arise that give cause for new postings as well as rewriting and rearranging things within the FAQ. But we have reached what was the goal when we started: to answer the most 'Frequently Asked Questions' about SQLyog.

The number of visitor here keeps rising for each day. We have had about 33.000 visitors since we started. Recently it is almost 500 per day. Quite a lot of the 'visitors' however are Search Engines and other sorts of robots. The number of 'real human visitors' is around 10.000 per month - and keeps rising. But each of you are welcome!

Remember too, that you are still welcome to post comments to each entry, and you can use the 'Add Content' -functionality to propose new entries, changes or just anything relevant to the Webyog FAQ. It will not show up in public until an Admin has approved it.

Firefox plug-in for Webyog FAQ now available! Firefox plug-in for Webyog FAQ now available!

Due to the overwhelming response from the network community to the Webyog FAQ, a Firefox plug-in for searching the Webyog FAQ is now available.  We and the Mozilla  Foundation now make it possible for you to search the webyog FAQ directly from the searchbar in the Firefox Browser. Once you have installed the plug-in you won't have to go to the Webyog website to search our FAQ but can do so no matter which page is displayed in your browser at the time. It displays just like Google, Yahoo, E-bay, Wikipedia (and all the other places where people used to search before the Webyog FAQ came into existence) does. It looks like below when it has been installed.

The Mozilla Foundation was worried that their servers might not be powerful enough to meet the demand. So we have agreed that you should just download it from our server instead. To do so, just click "Search FAQ" above and next "Install Firefox search plug-in". Now the Webyog FAQ-Firefox plug-in is installed.

FAQ software update ... FAQ software update ...

Once  more the  FAQ  software was updated.  Still it is not the "big one" that we are waiting for (the 1.6 version that should be out around February), but some security fixes, some administrative improvements and other small things.  We don't use the new DB2-support :-).

When I first updated I forgot to update the .htaccess file in the FAQ root directory.  Thus you could have experienced for about 20 minutes that links would not always resolve (a php_mod_rewrite issue).  Sorry for that!  Should be fixed now.

2005-11-19 13:32

A little statistics ... A little statistics ...

The webyog FAQ has proved to be a success.  It has now been up for about 2 months.  The average number of visitors per day since it started is 258 (as of 2005-11-03). That sums up to more than 15.000 visits. And it is steadily increasing. For the last 2 weeks alone average is close to 400 visitors per day - equal to more than 100.000 per year. The 'biggest hits' are the entries concerning connectivity issues.  I believe that a lot of visitors are not SQLyog users (yet!).  A lot of visitors come here from a Google search.

We also experience a dramatically decreased number of support questions in the Forums and in our support mailbox on the issues dealt with in the FAQ.

I believe the FAQ is now about half complete.  There are still empty categories.  Don't forget that you are welcome to write/propose a FAQ entry yourself and post it using the ADD CONTENT functionality.  We will then have a look at how to integrate your proposals with the system.

Thanks!

Once more updated software Once more updated software

FAQ software was updated from version 1.5.2 to 1.5.3. It is a minor update that first and foremost improves administrative functions. However some typographic improvements are included too ... and the problems with Indonesian language should be solved :-)

It had to happen someday .. It had to happen someday ..

This FAQ "ask questions" facility was spammed with some childish nonsense. That is the second time it happens. Access to the FAQ for this person is now blocked.  We have the means to do so.

We will not accept that childish behaviour anywhere where user input is possible on our website.  We have been operating a Forum with a very \'loose\' sort of control for years, and never experienced something like it there.

We will not accept that neither the FAQ\'s nor the Forums develop into a playground for kids feeling bored.

2005-10-09 09:48

Language detection disabled Language detection disabled

We disabled the automatic language detection of the FAQ-system. It will now always start displaying the English FAQ-content. And there is nothing more right now. FAQ-items in other languages will appear as localized versions of SQLyog 4.3 become available.

Hopefully this will be less confusing to non-English users this way.

2005-10-03 05:12

FAQ software updated. FAQ software updated.

We updated the FAQ software from version 1.5.0 to 1.5.2 for two reasons: 1)  a security bug with the old version became known about 2 days ago and 2)  new version fixes a bug with the admin panel.  We have had some problems with the new code and the php-configuration (I guess).  For short periods the FAQ\'s could have had some garbage characters in headers etc. when browser language was not English or German.  You can take it easy.  It is not a problem with your PC or your eyes or brain!  We apologize for any unrest that this may have caused :-)

We are waiting anxiously for next major release (hope to have it as a Christmas present!).

BTW: of course we use SQLyog too for editing the FAQ entries (and this entry as well). The FAQ admin panel is php-based and has same drawback as phpMyAdmin - it is slow! And writing HTML in the SQLyog BLOB-viewer gives much more control than does a forms-control in a webpage. Maybe one should propose extended HTML-support for the BLOB-viewer ?! Would be great for Forums etc ... Works fine here! No problem either to paste HTML from programs like FrontPage and Dreamweaver into the SQLyog BLOB-viewer

Please note that this FAQ is divided into language areas.

Currently available is English only. The system automatically detects the language of your browser, so if that is not English, please choose English from the drop-down box below.
